When you buy a house, there are many potential adventures in homeownership that you may go through at some point. In many cases, you simply have to smile and try to get through it, because it’s not going to be easy. For example, imagine that your dog wakes you up at 3 AM by shaking the water off of his fur up on the bed. It looks like your dog has just gone swimming in the pool and somehow got into your bedroom. Then you realize that you don’t have a pool. Your dog is covered in water and it’s coming from somewhere in the house. In this situation, many homeowners start to freak out and have no idea what to do. What would you do?
Dealing with Plumbing Problems
When this happens to you, you’ll need to quickly identify the problem. The problem could be a busted pipe in your house that is causing water to spew out all over the floor. It could be a clogged drain that is preventing water from being able to drain out of the house. It could even be a small hole in the tube that goes to the icemaker on your refrigerator causing water to leak out all over the kitchen. Regardless of what the problem is, you need to do your best to identify where the water is coming from. If you’re dealing with standing water, this may be difficult because you can’t really tell where the water is coming from. If you can hear water splashing, go to the source and see where it’s coming from.
Turning the Water Off
Once you have identified where the water is coming from, you need to immediately get the water shut off. Depending on how your house is set up, this could be done in one of a few different ways. If the water line behind the sink is leaking or the water line to the refrigerator is leaking, you should be able to find a water shut off valve right there to turn off. You simply turn the valve the other direction and it should turn off the water. If you cannot find a water shut off valve nearby, you may have to turn off the main valve to the house. This is sometimes located outside by the water meter and sometimes inside where the line comes in.
