Fixing broken Fences- Paramunt EquityOwning a home can feel empowering. However, a brand new house doesn’t stay new. As soon as the structure is lived in, it begins to suffer wear. To protect a home asset, a homeowner needs to be prepared to do basic maintenance on a regular basis. Some of the most common problems that happen first tend to be the backyard fence as well as the sprinkler system because they are both exposed to the elements and water.

Fixing Broken Sprinklers

The easiest fix associated with a sprinkler involves repairing a sprinkler head. These get easily broken or jammed. The old head has to be removed. Fortunately, these parts are screwed into the PVC feed pipe under the ground surface. Removing the dirt around the broken head makes access easy. The homeowner then just needs to unscrew the old unit, bring to a hardware store to match it with a new one, and screw the new one in to the feed pipe.

A broken PVC pipe is a bit more complicated. Where a pipe is broken, the section just needs to be cut out. A new section should be sized with a hacksaw and glued

in with connection joints. The ends are first painted with a primer and then the PVC glue. It seals quick so the pipe can be working within 30 minutes if repaired correctly. Then the covering dirt is put back in place to cover and protect the pipe.

Repairing a Broken Fence

If a fence panel is loose or missing, the job is simple. A homeowner just needs to buy a replacement panel and either hammer or wood screw it into place. Wood screws hold a panel in place better so they are more advisable.

Where a fence section needs replacing, the fence posts should be installed first. The job mainly requires a saw, a hammer, nails or screws, rope for leveling, a shovel, water, a mixing bucket and cement. This involves digging a hole where the post will go. The post is then put in the ground and cement is poured in as a base. Once the cement is set, the cross-frame beams can be attached via screws and nails to the installed posts. Then new panels can be nailed or screwed to the cross beams to finish the fence section.

Many home repair jobs can be handled by the homeowner with a bit of research, basic tools and the right replacement parts. By maintaining a home, it will last a long time and provide a great place of memories for a family for years to come.
