Let’s face it, no one likes moving. Whether moving across town or across the ocean, moving is a task that’s not easily tackled. Making the best of moving day can often be solved by not doing something that we all tend to do on a daily basis: procrastinate.
That’s right, don’t procrastinate! It’s best to plan days, weeks, or even months in advance of your moving date. Think of these tips as your “how to move homes 101” guide:
Organize Your Items
Designating one room in your house to use for your move is a great way to get organized. Make sure you organize all of your items and pack them early into boxes. Then, on moving day, you only need to load the truck, and then you’re off!
Donate Unwanted Items
If you have items that you no longer use, it may be best to donate them. It’s definitely less of a hassle then selling them, and you will feel good about doing it afterwards! Figuring out what to donate can be done while you’re packing your items.
Recruit Some Friends to Help
Do you have friends that owe you a favor (or who are just really awesome)? How do you expect to carry that heavy dresser? Make sure to call them ahead of time to ask for their help on moving day. It’s a cheaper alternative than hiring movers.
Set Up Utilities Prior to Your Arrival
With so much to do on moving day, it may be a good idea to call ahead of time to set up your utilities. This way, you have one less thing to worry about on moving day. Cable companies will likely give you a time window of several hours, so taking care of this prior to your arrival date will save you precious unpacking time and unnecessary stress later.
Reserve a Truck as Soon as Possible
Most likely, it will be necessary to rent a truck for your move. Doing so may save you some money, and will definitely save you the headache of looking for the best deal on the day of the move. You can also spend more time deciding what size truck you need. There’s no sense in having to pay for truck space that you don’t use.
Utilizing the above tips when planning to move will definitely help making the best of moving day. Plan ahead!
